The Secretary-General of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie has referred to the “defection” of one of their strong members, Okere Adams, as a rumour, but that if it is true, then it is a very sad loss to the party in general.
The Sec-General’s assertion was prompted by a question raised by a journalist during the party’s press briefing yesterday, when he questioned the Secretary-General about the defection of one time SLPP Minister to the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC).
He retorted that as far as he was concerned, Okere Adams’ defection to the APC is a rumour, as he had not yet forwarded any resignation letter to him as the Secretary-General.
He however affirmed that if at all the SLPP big-wig had defected to the ruling party, then it is very sad and a negative development to them, as he is one of the pioneers who resurrected the party and prepared it for the 1996 General elections that ultimately brought them to power.
Since then, he said, the contribution of Okere Adams to the development of the SLPP has been overwhelming, which could not be downplayed.
He said that prior to what he referred to as a rumour, Okere Adams had only complained to him on phone about “something” he was not pleased about. But he did not state whether he was going to resign from the party on that account.
By and large, the Sec-Gen noted, if such decision is taken by Okere Adams, then it will be a sad loss to the party.
