Jesmed Foday-Mami Suma was arrested on the same day as 12 Njala University students on 24 March 2017, during a peaceful protest at the Cotton Tree in central Freetown.
It is that Suma said, “If the government does not take action, we will make this country ungovernable,” which, according to the State, is tantamount to an act of sedition.
On Tuesday, 28 March 2017, Jesmed Foday-Mami Suma, was granted Le100 bail condition for the offence of sedition and acting disorderly.
In one of Suma’s Court appearances, on 14 May 2017, he referred to three consecutive adjournments of his matter as “an injustice system that suppresses dissenting voices against the present government”.
“I’m speaking against corruption which is stinking in the justice system and Magistrate Binneh Kamara has proved that he lacks the moral and the ethical values to uphold the Constitution of Sierra L was adjourned to 2 June 20eone.” Suma said. ”The courtroom is now a playground to buy and sell the rights of the poor.” Suma added.
Followed these comments, Magistrate Kamara, on Thursday 25 May 2017 described such actions as a contempt in the face of the Court and therefore reclaims the bail conditions previously granted to the accused.
In his address, the Magistrate further disclosed that he will file a private lawsuit against the accused for defaming his character.
The defence counsel pleaded to the Court offering to apologize publicly for the comments made previously. The Magistrate sent Suma back to jail.
