The Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Njala University has gone on what they described as a “Food-finding mission”, despite the “solemn plea” to the students to conduct exams before going on another strike. “Food-finding” is another term for a labour action or strike where lecturers will stop all job-related tasks.
A letter from the Office of the Secretary General of the Academic Staff Association of Njala University, dated Friday 24 November 2017, indicated, “Njala lecturers will not be available after this date, 24 November 2017. This notice is a follow-up to a prior letter to the Njala administration dated 14 November 2017 in which ASA requested payment of all outstanding salaries and other emoluments. The academic staff will engage in “a food-finding mission” after 24th November because our demands have not been met.”
Agnes Prat, at the Bo Campus, said, “We would have started comprehensive exams on Monday, but the lecturers did not come to conduct the exam and we have studied for it.” She continued, “We have begged them to conduct the exams but to no avail. This is very serious. The university administration and the government should treat it with all the seriousness and urgency.”
Two months salary has been remitted into the accounts of lecturers since last Friday. The payments are very late. According to the President of the ASA, Dr. Samba Moriba it has taken them four months without getting salary.
