The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and Njala University have crisscrossed paths and directions with regards to new courses proposed by Njala.
The TEC is responsible to regulate the activities of tertiary institutions in Sierra Leone as provided by Tertiary Regulations of 2006. According to TEC regulations of 2006, Clause 11 (3) “… no new programmes of instruction are mounted and regulation in respect thereof effected without the prior approval of the commission.”
Njala University recently advertised that they will be offering new courses such as Bachelor in Law (LLB) and Bachelor of Science with Honours in Business Management programmes.
The management of Tertiary Education Commission was quick to issue a press release on Thursday 22 November 2017, stating, “Njala has mounted a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Science with Honours in Business Management and is seeking application for admission for the 2017/2018 academic year without the approval of TEC.”
The release furthered stated that such programmes mounted by Njala University are unauthorized and unacceptable and it also cautioned the public that the said programs will not be recognized by the Commission until Njala fulfills TEC regulations.
The Registrar at Njala University, Ali Turay, said, “I cannot comment for now because I have nothing official before me with regards to our press release from the Tertiary Education Commission”.
Many attempts were made to reach the Public Relations Officer of TEC but calls were not answered.
