The Minister of Energy, Ambassador Henry Macauley has told stakeholders in the energy sector that he is impressed with the overlaps in the sector but that action is required in order to harmonize and properly direct these overlaps. He stated further that these overlaps are like ingredients for a good food and the Ministry is like the cook. He maintained that if the ingredients are not properly placed, the food will not be palatable as expected.
On a brief visit to the Minister, the head of Welthhungerhilf non-governmental organization in Sierra Leone Mr. Jochen Moninger gave a brief overview of his organization which has some links with the Ministry of Energy in Sierra Leone in line with poverty alleviation, the organization operates in schools, health centers and deprived communities with efforts of making life better for the people. He spoke of their solar energy scheme operated in the rural poor, sector learning and other energy solutions.
Mr. Moninger who has spent four years in Sierra Leone stated that the Ministry is no stranger to him as he had been working with the Director and Permanent Secretary to partner with in their energy programs. Introducing his colleagues to the Minister, Mr. Moninger spoke of the pending solar energy program his organization will be launching next week at the Peninsular for which he asked the Ministry to take the lead.
Responding, the Minister thanked them for coming to his office to inform him of their energy project in Sierra Leone. He was quick to remind them of the government’s position in the area of energy which he thinks all energy projects should follow. The Minister further stated that his Ministry will support energy initiatives that will benefit especially the rural people adding that pilot programs must be successful and the beneficiaries must participate.
On the very solar energy, the Minister stated that it is a concept that is not well understood including its costing. He said the model identified by the organization is encouraging as it has man power component and for the Ministry, he said it is never difficult for it to own what it has started. Among other things, he accepted the invitation to the solar energy launching the following week and ended that continuous meetings, dialogues, harmonizing and direction will be the Ministry’s next immediate moves.
