The interim executive of Malimba has said that the group seeks to “move the Limbas from the corners and to the Centre.”
In a recent press conference held at the Limba Church hall, Fort Street, interim Chairman of Malimba, Bishop Tamba Alieu Koroma explained that it was the late President Siaka Stevens who formed the ‘Akutay’, which was initially a Limba friendship group until it was infiltrated by other tribes during the reigns of Siaka Stevens’ successor, Joseph Saidu Momoh.
He added that during this time the group’s agenda was transformed and it became political and it subsequent activities left a bitter taste in the mouth of Sierra Leoneans.
However, since the end of the war the Limbas have been in the shadow of the helm of the nation’s activities; this led to the formation of the Limba Development Union (LDU).  Notwithstanding the formation of the LDU, some members and sympathizers of ‘Akutay’ wanted it to be revived.
“Hence, we concluded by striking a compromise to merge LDU and ‘Akutay’, which led to the birth of Malimba. Nonetheless, there were few ‘Akutay’ sympathizers who refused to be part of Malimba and still advocated for the revival of ‘Akutay’, he said.
Former ‘Akutay’ now interim vice chair, Malimba, Hon. Philipson Kamara said as far as he is concerned ‘Akutay’ is dead. I’m the only entrusted with the constitutional mandate to convey ‘Akutay’ meetings, therefore any meeting held by any other person or persons are illegitimate. He explained that he had dissolved ‘Akutay’ and urges sympathizers’ who want to revamp ‘Akutay’ to desist from it and join Malimba to ensure the development of the Limba people. He also explained that Limba unions in the diaspora are also in support of Malimba.
He noted that President Ernest Koroma was very pleased to know that the Limbas have finally united to preserve their culture and develop their people.
“That’s why President Koroma has agreed to officially launch Malimba on 13th February, 2016 at the Miatta Conference Hall,” he said.
Also adding that in order to avoid the mistakes of ‘Akutay’ we have decided that only people of Limba origin that would be part of Malimba.
