Sierra Leone News: More leadership and coordination needed…MSF

The Operations Director of Medecins Sans Frontier (MSF) in an interview with BBC disclosed that the present situation of the EBOLA crisis in West Africa is worrisome. He said because governments were not prepared and the disease is new in the region, health professionals are finding it very difficult to handle the situation, especially in Liberia. The Director, with disappointment, noted that this is the first time MSF has to deal with an epidemic which is getting out of control. He told BBC that in Liberia, his organization has positioned it-self for an 80-bed treatment centre in, Monrovia, but as it is now, they will have to expand the centre to hold 1,000 beds, which means the situation is not getting better. Presently, the MSF has a centre with 120 beds which is already full, as a result the medical team had to close the centre for two days, to contain the inflow of cases. In Guinea and Sierra Leone, the operations Director maintained that the situation is not as bad as Liberia, but more needs to be done in terms of technical and logistic support, which International partners can play a great role to assist in, to save more lives. According to the report, the MSF Operations Director appealed that International partners be more proactive to assist the countries affected with the deadly virus, which health systems are weak and socio- economy, affected due to the outbreak. Meanwhile, the Director for the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) in America, has also disclosed that because of the present situation in all countries affected, it will be difficult to put the out-break under control in six months. He said people should listen to the prevention messages that government gives, and try to maintain the “no body contact” and reduce movement message. Yesterday, Health ministers from the affected countries met in Ghana to further discuss the way forward, which will put an end to the crisis, that has claimed the lives of almost 1,500 in West Africa.
