On Monday 23rd January 2017, Joseph Foday Kabia and Alimamy Kargbo were committed to stand trial in the High Court for the alleged murder of retired Magistrate Imran Rahman during a robbery at his Marjay Town residence in Freetown.
According to Police report on 23rd December 2016, Kabia and Kargbo conspired together with other unknown persons to commit robbery at the house of the deceased while being armed with house breaking implements and during the robbery alleged to have murdered him.
Police were able to arrest the two accused while three others are still on the run.
The accused were charged to Court on three counts of conspiracy to murder, robbery with aggravation and murder and during the preliminary investigations at Magistrate Court, State Prosecutors led four witnesses including the deceased’s wife Marie Rahman and three police investigators from CID headquarters.
During the investigations police recovered stolen household properties including a jeep from the residences of two suspects who are presently on the run and these properties were submitted in Court as exhibits and now form part of the evidences against the accused.
According to Magistrate Kamara “I’ve looked through the evidences before the Court and I am convinced and satisfied that the accused have to answer to the offences as charged” therefore he stated “I am committing the matter to High Court with no bail granted to the accused.” He maintained that the accused has a right to defend themselves in High Court through legal presentation or can do so by themselves.
Being investigated and standing trial for their lives, the accused on to the day of committal were not represented by any lawyer and they remain incarcerated at the Pademba road Correctional Centre while awaiting trial.
