Sierra Leone News: Leader of Govt. business tells nominees …“Stay away from politics”

Rounding up the debate, on another set of presidential nominees, the Leader of Government Business in Parliament Hon. Sidi Tunis yesterday admonished the nominees to stay away from politics in their various offices they will be holding.
According to Hon Tunis, the ninth Report of the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service on its tenth sitting is the unanimous decision of the membership after conductive interview on Tuesday 17 July 2018 at the Committee Room one.
Hon Tunis said that despite being appointed through political means, the nominees after approval and assumption of duties should stay away from politics, but if possible give their financial and moral support to the politicians.
Seconding the Motion for the approval of the 8 Presidential nominees, SLPP Chief Whip Hon. Dixon Rogers paid glowing tributes to Ms Tuma Adama Jabbie the proposed Chairperson of the Board of Directors National Revenue Authority (NRA). He said besides being a woman and a friend of the SLPP has always been with them in discharging her duties, adding that her appointment is by no means compensation but by merit.
He went further to draw the attention of the proposed Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) David Panda Noah to big trucks being parked along the highways to the provinces, which he claims have led to so many accidents.
The Opposition APC Whip Hon. Hassan Abdul Sesay from Constituency 050 Tonkolili District said when fine people come to the House “we will approve them” in the interest of development and not politics. He assured that they will continue to support the young people to grow in society with special reference to women.
Hon. Sesay cautioned the new SLRSA Executive Director to listen and accommodate people with ideas and passion to work, adding that commercial drivers are reckless to the core with no respect for the lives of people.
“Think Sierra Leone and (do) not (be) partisan” he said to all the nominees.
Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay from Constituency 094 Moyamba district expressed thanks to the Speaker for giving women the zeal to perform by creating platform for them to contribute to the debate in Parliament.
“Manso your tomorrow will be greater than your today, you have suffered for the party for far too long. You have the right to be happy but please try to do the work properly” she said to the proposed Chairman Board of Directors Sierra Leone Port Authority, Mr Abu Manso Dumbuya.
She reminded the proposed Board Chairperson of the National Insurance Company (NIC) Mrs Martha Consilia Kanagbo that most people are saying that the NIC is a dead horse, but “I’m sure you will definitely revive it.”
Making his maiden speech Hon Lamin Foday Kabba Constituency 044 from Koinadugu said “every politician is selfish, myself standing here is hoping for all of you to fail but should I see over 7 million people suffer because of my selfishness” he questioned rhetorically, before adding … “No. Go out and perform for a better Sierra Leone” he told them.
Hon Ibrahim Ben Kargbo from constituency 034 Bombali district disclosed that the nominations were done out of objectivity which they on the other side of the House have no problem with. He stated “when the APC comes to power in 2023 we will ensure to keep all of these nominees in office”.
After the unanimous approval of the nominees by all the MPs present the Hon. Speaker Chernor Abass Bundu called on the nominees to go with the confidence from both Parliament and the President that indeed they will perform, stating they should work in the interest of the country
The approved nominees are
1. Hon Abu Manso Dumbuya-Chairman Board of Director Sierra Leone Port Authority,
2. Ms Tamu Adama Jabbie-Chairperson Board of Director NRA,
3. Mrs. Martha Consilia Kanagbo-Chairperson National Insurance Company
4. Mr Kalilu Omaru Bah-Chairman Public Service Commission
5. Timothy Musa Kabba-Director General Petroleum Directorate
6. David Panda Noah-Executive Director SLRSA
7. Moses Tiffa Baio-Director General Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority
8. Mohamed Massaquoi-Director General National Civil Registration Authority.
