The Chief Executive Officer, Amadu Justice Bah of IMAT College, yesterday revealed to journalists in a press briefing held at the college campus at Kingtom that the college will award scholarship grants worth two hundred million Leones (Le 200, 000,000) to hundred deserving students for the 2016/2017acdemic year.
Speaking at the press briefing, the CEO disclosed that the scholarship grants will be awarded to students who are offering Certificate, Diploma and Degree programmes as part of the college’s corporate social responsibility. He noted that the college’s move is to complement government’s effort in improving education “especially at a crucial time like this when the Ebola has eaten up the country’s economy,” he said.
Last year, the IMAT College awarded 70 scholarships to students considered as underprivileged. The increase this year; from 70 to 100 Mr. Bah maintained, is to increase the college’s aid package to include more less privileged students whose parents or guardians are likely to find it difficult to sponsor their education through the college.
“We note with particular concern the effect of the Ebola outbreak on poor student families and we are using this gesture as a way to ameliorate this effect on our students’ families,” Mr Bah pointed out. He added that as a responsible academic institution, “IMAT College will rejoice with the people of Sierra Leone in times of happiness and will stand firm to console the people in times of anguish.
The CEO in his overview of the college’s establishment said it was established in 2009 and it is affiliated with the University of London as its Teaching Institution in Sierra Leone. He said students offering courses in the college will be awarded the same degree as those studying in the London University campus. He revealed that over the years, a number of Sierra Leoneans have earned degrees from the college. He however observed that over the years Sierra Leonean students seeking degrees from the University of London have encountered so much financial constraints.
He also revealed that IMAT College is affiliated with the most prominent public university in Guinea and because of its affiliation it is now possible to study for the first truly bilingual degree programmes within the Mano River Union countries. He said IMAT is opening up opportunities for many Sierra Leonean students to study for job oriented programmes.
The Media, Brand and Communication Advisor, Amadu Sandy maintained that the college is poised to make Sierra Leone education “an exportable brand” equipping youth for better opportunities. He posited that the college has well staffed teaching capacity and other learning facilities to aid its students and ensure they perform well during international Bachelor of Law examinations.
Neneh Binta Senesie, Admission Manager of IMAT College, encouraged students with a minimum credits to apply for the various programmes as the scholarship will be awarded to deserving students who meet the requirements. She called on the public to attend the upcoming Open Day Programme in March to find out more about the scholarship and the courses offered.
She acknowledged certain challenges faced by the college administration, such as the lack of funding for certain development projects, but assured that such a shortcoming, will not move them away from the vision of exporting education as part of government’s agenda for prosperity.
