Sierra Leone News: ‘Illegal structures should not be on beach fronts’-Tourism Minister

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture are presently on a mass demolition exercise of illegal entertainment structures along the Lumley beach front, on Kingston Hall Way, road in Freetown. In an interview with this medium, the Director of Tourism and Culture, Mohamed Jalloh stated that successive Governments over the years tried hard to discourage people in the tourism industry not to erect illegal entertainment structures on beach fronts. He said some governments partially succeeded in making them see reason to desist from constructing both temporary and permanent structures on the beach, but it did not yield for long, most of the structures were hastily constructed back causing eye sore. As a result the illegal structures are not only an eye sore, but also a recipe for huge pile of garbage directly on the beach, and a negative impact on the environment. Owners of some of these illegal structures cry foul, that they’ve been hardly hit by the ebola disease, and now government is hard on them to further weaken their businesses. But the reason for the demolition is that it is wrong to construct a structure on the beach, as these are protected areas. Mr. Jalloh furthered that people in the hospitality business are fully aware that they should operate on the opposite side of the beach, where there is enough land space for them to carry out their business. He maintained that the demolition exercise will start from the beach front of Family Kingdom down to the Atlantic Bar and Restaurant adjacent to the Freetown Golf Club.
