The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) is undertaking a two day planning retreat at Ocean View Hotel, Juba on its strategic plan for 2016-2020.
This is the Commission’s third strategic plan in a row to be formulated by HRCSL since its inception and it is predicated on the statutory mandate of the Commission which is to promote and protect human rights in Sierra Leone. It is also significantly drawn on International Human Rights Instruments to which Sierra Leone is a signatory.
Speaking at the retreat, the Chairperson of HRCSL, Brima A Sheriff urged the staff to give their best inputs into the plan. He also said that the plan was to speedily and efficiently address human rights violations and to seek remedies for victims whose human rights have been violated.
The Consultant for the Strategic Plan, Abraham John, highlighted that the objective of the strategic plan is to discuss the human rights landscape in Sierra Leone from the lenses of Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organisations, UN Agencies and Members of Parliament. He also said the plan is to engender and under study the capacity gap analysis of HRCSL and its linkage to the strategic priorities for the next five years.
The Consultant further said a review of the vision, mission statements and core values of HRCSL shall be looked into and also to review its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.
The key driver to the strategic plan is to make human rights relevant to all in Sierra Leone irrespective of political orientation, social affiliation or status. In this regard, clear strategic directions, goals and objectives have been carefully crafted to address existing and emerging human rights issues in Sierra Leone. The Commission will be looking at these nine strategic priorities for 2016-2020: protection against discrimination, effective complaints handling, institutional capacity development, human rights education and training, respect for and observance of economic, social and cultural rights, respect for and observance of civil and political rights, obligations of public officials to protect human rights and access to justice, promote compliance with regional and international human rights obligations and business and human rights.
