A national NGO, Community Empowerment for Peace and Agricultural Development (CEPAD-SL) with funds from Japan through UNDP-SL is currently implementing a project titled, “Strengthening access to health care and community led development”, in the Mafindor Chiefdom, Kono District. The project involves three components: health, livelihood and economic recovery and governance.
CEPAD-SL also donated five motorbikes to the District Health Management Team (DHMT) during a ceremony held at the Government Hospital in Koidu in support of the outreach activities carried out by the Peripheral Health Unit staff in order to ease their operations in the vulnerable communities.
In his statement the Executive Director CEPAD-SL, Daniel Alfred Sinava Moiwo, disclosed that the project targeted five communities including Sambaya, Koindu, Kuttay, Yardu, Desembadu and Kamiendor in the Mafindor chiefdom.
He maintained that the project’s goal is to strengthen resilience to disasters such as Ebola Virus Disease by promoting an integrated approach to improved health outcomes and community development for border communities.
He stated that part of the project activities include rehabilitation of water wells, rehabilitation and construction of toilets, training and support of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), support to outreach activities undertaken by the Peripheral Health Unit (PHUs) staff in the communities.
Formally receiving the keys from the Executive Director CEPAD-SL, the District Medical Officer in Kono, Dr. Gerald Young, said the use of the facilities will be greatly monitored by his administration.
Abu Musa Amara, the Councilor of Ward 88 in Kono cautioned the PHU staff to use the motorbikes for the intended purpose and also added that the community members should not put the PHU staff under any pressure to use the motorbikes for the purpose that is not intended for. SM/23/11/17
