Guineans fraternizing in peace
Guineans born, as well as those residing in Sierra Leone over the weekend celebrated a national citizen’s day of peace.
Organized by the Guinea Embassy in Sierra Leone in collaboration with the Council of Guineans living in Sierra Leone, Guineans from all walks of life converged to fraternize. All the various tribes in Guinea together with the Susu Mandingos, and Yalunkas, were treated to a sumptuous meal.
The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia with both the young and old milling while others sat in groups catching up on old times and recent events. The Guinean Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Foday Camara, sat with Sierra Leoneans and members from MARWOPNET discussing issues affecting the sub-region.
Mohamed Lamin Tarawalli, of the Council of Guineans in Sierra Leone, has strong roots in the Susu community in Guinea. He welcomed guests and called Sierra Leoneans and Guineans to the dance floor as a sign of unity, noting that both countries are one family.
Vice President of the Council of Guineans, Osman Sillah, stated that this was a moment the council has been longing for a long time to bring together the various tribes of Guinea residing in the country to fraternize and interact with each other.
When it was time for Ambassador Camara to take the podium, the national anthem of both countries filled the air, a sign of mutual respect and relationship. “Your ethnicity or political affiliation does not matter. What is important is a sense of nationalism for national development”. Ambassador Foday Camara who was honored to be part of history said the national citizen’s day of peace is a weeklong event, which is observed every year in Guinea to give every individual a platform to discuss issues of concern and the way forward. He added that this is the first time it is being observed in Sierra Leone, which was made a reality by executives of the council. AC/6/11/17
