Sierra Leone News: Fraud…Fake Lawyer caught in $96,000 scam

Suliaman Kargbo, a resident of 40 Kroo Town Road who is falsely moving around as M.S. Kargbo and a Lawyer, was yesterday remanded at the Pademba Road maximum prison in Freetown by Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No.2 for defrauding the sum of US $96, 000 (ninety-six thousand United States Dollars) by falsely pretending to be a legal practitioner.
The matter was prosecuted by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dunnia, while Lawyer Julian Cole announced to the court that Lawyer C.F. Edwards will represent the accused facing nine counts charge of fraud.
On count one, Sulaiman is charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to law. The particulars of offence state that on diverse dates between 9th May and 13th May 2013 in Freetown, the accused conspired with other persons unknown to defraud Subash Patel and Mayour Patel the sum total of US$ 96, 000 (ninety-six thousand United States Dollars) equivalent to Le 412, 800, 00(four hundred and twelve thousand, eight hundred thousand Leones) pretending that one Alhaji Musa Sheriff alias Alhaji Mohamed Suma has 14.9 carats of diamond for sale.
On count two, he is charged with unqualified person practicing as a legal practitioner contrary to Section 21 (a) of the Legal Practitioners’ Act No. 15 of 2000 as amended. The particulars of offence state that the accused acted as a legal practitioner representing Alhaji Mohamed Sheriff for the purchasing of 14.9 carats diamond, causing money to be paid with intent to defraud contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916. He was charged under the same Section 32(1) for count three, whilst for counts four, five, six, seven, eight and nine he was charged with obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act, 1916.
Magistrate Kamanda asked the Complainant, Isatu Barry to identify and describe the accused in the dock. She explained that during the time of the incident the accused was dressed in dark suit and white shirt with tie just like Lawyers would dress stating that she never thought he was a fake.
The matter was adjourned as Counsel representing the accused was absent while Magistrate Kamanda ordered that the accused be remanded in custody until 15 August, 2013.
