Female inmates of the Correctional Centre in Freetown will take part in a beauty pageant and talent exhibition show for the first time. The program aims to rehabilitate female inmates behind bars. The activity has been scheduled to take place on the 15th November 2019 at the Female Correctional Centre at New England, back of Special Court. There will be an audition for female inmates. The pageant is organized by the Gender and Equal Opportunity Unit of the Female Correctional Service in partnership with SaloneJamboree. The event is dubbed: ‘Miss Correctional 2019’ with the theme: ‘Reform and Rehabilitate Inmates for a better society.’ The Head of Gender and Equal Opportunity Unit of the Female Correctional Service, Superintendent Aminata Turay, said female inmates face psychological challenges such as depression, anxiety, dissatisfaction with life. She said to address some of these issues her unit will be organizing the first-ever beauty pageant show. She said similar events have been organized in Kenya and Brazil. Superintendent Turay said, “This program complies with international best practice to enhance the physical, ethical, health and psychological protection of the inmates.” Murtala Mohamed Kamara, CEO of SaloneJamboree, has worked with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Correctional Service for this partnership. Kamara said he is happy for the opportunity to be part of the reform of female inmates and thereby contribute to nation building. He assured all that they will do all in their powers to stage a successful event.

The Miss Correctional 2019 platform aims to rehabilitate female inmates behind bars to reduce the number of inmates who re-offend after they are released. The program also aims to build the capacity of female inmates to become self-reliant after they are released. The program will also showcase products that are locally produced by female inmates. The program will help female inmates to develop in themselves growth in confidence, outgoing personality, and a positive self-image. The contestants will undergo training such as how to walk along a catwalk, group dances and motivational talks, etc. The event will be staged indoors and selected members from the public, civil society groups, members of the diplomatic and consular corps and NGOs will be invited.
