Sierra Leone News: FambulTok empowers Peace Mothers in Bombali and Koinadugu districts
As part of its continued efforts to empower women, especially peace mothers in its operational districts in Sierra Leone, FambulTok International-Sierra Leone, with funds from United States department has over the weekend handed over cheques, rice mill and cassava grater machines to peace mothers in Bombali and Koinadugu districts. This was as a result of the outcomes of the December 2013 peace mothers’ district trainings on the gender acts and child right act held in Kabala and Bombali districts respectively. During the training peace mothers were allowed to give updates on their various activities. After presentations, it was evident that some peace mothers groups have started work even without external support based on the ideology that communities could do more if they all work as a team. It was also realized that they could do even better if they are supported by organizations. Based on the outcomes in both districts, FambulTok, after its assessment, decided to give peace mothers a facelift so they could embark on development projects. Over the weekend, FambulTok International-Sierra Leone handed over two brand new rice mill and cassava grater machines to peace mothers in Bombali district. The rice mill machine was offered to peace mothers in Masabong section, Paki Masabong chiefdom and the cassava grater machine donated to peace mothers in Masongbo section, Makari Gbanti chiefdom. Also other peace mothers in various chiefdoms would receive cheques worth millions of Leones to support their different programmes. Handing over the machines to the women, Director of Peace mothers-FambulTok Micheala Ashwood said the funds are from US government, to support peace mothers’ activities in different chiefdoms. She appealed to the beneficiaries to make good use of the machines and the funds. She disclosed that FambulTok builds the bridge that exists in communities, stressing that those that were selected had done so much on their own; she also encouraged weak communities to step up. Receiving the rice mill on behalf of her section, District Executive chairman who doubles as chairlady for peace mothers in Masabong section, SiaForyoh, extended thanks and appreciation to the US government. She promised judicious utilization of the machines, adding that other sections in the chiefdom would have access to it. She explained that peace mothers have raised over Le17million through their monthly and micro credit scheme. On behalf of Masongbo section, Deputy chairlady Kadi Kanu explained that peace mothers have over 8 acres of cassava and the donation of the cassava grater would enhance their production. However peace mothers in three sections in Koinadugu districts-Heremakono in Wara Wara Yagala chiefdom. Heremakono 2 in Sengbe and Dogoloya section in Folosaba Dembelia chiefdom received cheques worth millions of Leones. Other peace mothers’ groups are expected to receive similar offer.
