The European Union (EU), Head of Delegation, Ambassador Tom Vens, on Wednesday 18 April 2018, at his Leicester Peak office, thanked different organizations that they worked with during the elections and they made donations to them from the equipment and other materials the EU Observers left.
The Ambassador said the EU Observers have almost done their job as the final team will leave Sierra Leone today after following the court cases of the elections. He said because they are not going with all the equipment they came with, they have decided to leave them behind that the EU have distributed to some of the organizations they worked with.
The organizations that benefitted from these gestures are Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Department of Peace and Conflict, Local Council Committee, Department of Mass Communication (MASCOM) and Center for Youth Activities (CCYA).
“I want to thank all of you and all Sierra Leoneans for a peaceful election, it was tense but we all made it through and the country is still peaceful and the EU is committed to work with the new government for the development of Sierra Leone.”
Ambassador Vens said he is happy that the country is safe and normalcy has returned. He called on all the organizations especially the civil societies to continue to provide the education
for good governance in the country.
He said he hopes the equipment and furniture donated to them will come in handy to continue to do their jobs at all times.
All five of the organizations representatives were given the lists of items donated to them to sign for them and the president of SLAJ Kelvin Lewis thanked the Ambassador and said they will make good use of them in the future,
“We are very grateful for this donation and we will use them to improve our work in the future. I want to also thank you for the high visibility vest you donated to us during the elections. It came in handy and helped us to do our work, although some of our colleagues were attacked, the vest was very useful to our members.”
The Head of Department of Mass Comm, Tonya Musa, thanked Ambassador Vens and said they are happy for the donation and they will make sure the students made good use of them.
“My department does not have enough funding and we are looking for financial support to improve the department and the quality of education.”
Ngolo Katta of CCYA said this is not the first time that EU has donated to them and they are happy that they have recognized them again as what they have given them will be use by the youths across the country. He thanked Ambassador Vens and said the role they played in the election was very crucial.
Sahr Moigua representing Local Council said they are happy for the donation and they will make good use of them and said the election would not have been so peaceful if EU was not part of it because the role they played the support they gave were enormous.
