The House of Parliament yesterday ratified an amendment to the University Act of 2014 which has established another higher institution of learning in the country, the Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology.
Addressing Parliamentarians from the vestibule of the well of Parliament, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Minkailu Bah informed the House that the establishment of the EBK University comes in the wake of growing demands for the establishment of additional tertiary institutions in the country, especially to address gaps in the science and technology needs of the country.
The college to be located at Magburaka in the Tonkolili District, the Minister disclosed, “will have first-class facilities depicting 21st Century Universities” and that technical education will be given prominence.
During deliberations from the floor, Members of Parliament, mostly from the ruling APC party asserted that the establishment of another University in the north is a fulfilment of the President’s promise to the nation in the well of Parliament during his last state opening of Parliament.
They recalled that the President had said in his Presidential Address that he will prioritize education by creating tertiary institutions that will train the country’s youth for middle-level jobs that will propel the country’s economic development.
