Sierra Leone News: End Poverty and Disease for National Development…NERC Boss
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) National Ebola Response Centre (NERC) Major(Rtd) Palo Conteh disclosed that for national development to become a reality, Governments around the world should end poverty and disease. He made this disclosure during a national conference organised by the Office of National Security (ONS) to map the way forward for a more robust security sector that will be prompt to respond, when there is need. Palo Conteh stated that without a proper and robust security sector, development will be farfetched, and this is the reason why main players in the security sector should collaborate with MDA’s, including civil society for better coordination. He noted that because systems were not properly in place, the ebola epidemic caught the country by surprise, which affected all spheres of society, stalling the gains made in development. CEO Conteh added that the ebola outbreak is a wakeup call to all Sierra Leoneans that modern day security does not only involve conventional war, but also events that threatens the security of a state. He called on the public and main security actors to be more vigilant, as we reach the end of the road in the ebola fight, noting that there is no room for complacency or harbouring of sick patients, especially those in quarantine, as they should adhere strictly to rules and regulations of medics. The NERC, boss was optimistic that the conference will encourage thought-provoking brain storming to further enhance efficiency in the sector, as it will also help to reduce the disease to zero cases. Speaking on strides made in both internal and external security, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, gave detailed presentations on how far both institutions have gone with regards to proper policing with community participation, as well as sovereignty security (MAC-P/MACA) and International peace-keeping in troubled states. Both state security institutions pledged commitment and assured of support to maintain peace and order and at the same time protect life and property without abuse. Monday May 25, 2015
