Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation with support from the International Labour Organization has started a two-day Human Resource Management Conference for various Human Resource Managers in different institutions, at the British Council, Tower Hill in Freetown.
The Executive Secretary of the Employers’ Federation, Leslie Thomas said the objective of the conference was to bring various HR’s together in order that they have frank discussions on their roles and responsibilities, as well as the challenges and the way forward to make Human Resource Management, a strategic business partner in the different Institutions and Organizations.
Senior Lecturer and Head of Department at Fourah Bay College, Samuel Briama, noted that it was necessary for such gathering to come together and discuss Human Resource issues, which is an art and science altogether.
He explained that HR management is now the most crucial tool in all corporate settings; therefore the public should be aware of its great role, HR plays in the smooth running of Institutions.
Giving an overview of HR management in Sierra Leone, Aminata Kamara from the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank spoke on the main objectives and challenges of Human Resource Management, noting that human beings are the most important resources in an institution therefore the success or failure of the HR Department depends on the top management.
She said HR professionals need capacity, integrity, and professionalism in order to succeed, as to avoid skills mismatch in Institutions.
In this regard, participants explained some of the challenges in their various Institutions, ranging from poor labour laws, politics in management, lack of required skills to make operations smooth, low level of encouragement to capacitate staff and public sector reforms which is very slow.
The Chief Executive Officer, Safecon S.L Limited and the Managing Director of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited gave a talk on why Human Resources Management should be seen as a business partner, with all the requisite requirements to perform well.
Sierra Rutile Limited made a presentation on the local content policy which is the crucial issue, especially within International Organizations, while Limkokwing University made presentation on the need for tertiary education for creative technology to meet the demands of today’s job market.
The Conference will end today were critical issues will be discussed for the success of Human Resource Managers, as well as to give update on employment policy and labour laws in the Country.
