Dock Workers Union comprising of Freetown Terminal, Leone Dock Company and Sierra Leone Ports Authority recently, elected Alpha Bundu as their new president.
The election was held at their 8th Delegates conference at the seafarers complex over the weekend and was well attended by delegates from the different offices.
The position of a president was contested for by Alpha Bundu and Abdulrahman Denton. Alpha Bundu polled 426 and Abdulrahman Denton pulled 74 with 17 void votes.
The then chairman read the results to the delegates and named Alpha Bundu as the president elect of the Dock Workers Union. Only the presidency had secret ballot but other positions were open ballot.
According to the former chairman of the union, Parka Kamara, the union has been without an executive for the past nine months and that they were operating under a five man interim body. The chairman went further to say that the delegates are the ones that should choose who they want as this is a democratic process and should not be in secrecy.
In his keynote address while officially opening the delegate conference and at the same time representing the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Emmanuel Lansana who is a senior labour officer in the Ministry, started by welcoming all delegates present to the conference. He noted that dock workers are contributing greatly to the economy of this country.
He also encouraged the workers by telling them that government had increased their minimum wage to five hundred thousand Leones and that by September, they should be expecting increase in their salaries, and should also comport themselves as a union and continue their work.
He also encouraged them to conduct themselves in a peaceful atmosphere while the election is being held.
The election process was free, fair, transparent and violent free. All other positions were contested for unless that of the Secretary-General who will be appointed by the executive and the president. The position of Internal Auditor was contested for by Ishmael Conteh and it went unopposed, the position of financial secretary was won by Abdul karim Sesay, also the treasurer was contested for by Zainab Mansaray and was unopposed, so also was the public relations officer that was won by Alie Turay and lastly Ferdinal Valentine was elected as Assistant Secretary General.
In his response after the election, the newly-elected president thanked the entire delegate for electing him as president and promised that he will not fail them.
