Some disaster victims at Regent have received food and care packages from the German NGO, Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
Pastor Ibrahim Kamara, a wounded survivor of the 14 August 2017 mudslide, said, the food and other items for disaster victims will bring some relief. He said the package will help them to address their basic needs. Kamara said the food package is good as it includes all the necessary condiments to prepare a decent meal for a family.
He said, “I received a bag of rice of 50kg, charcoal, water bundles, onions, salt, sugar, beans, vegetable oil, palm oil and smoked fish. Victims also received breakfast condiments including: powdered milk, butter, luncheon meat, tea, cocoa and Ovaltine.
One of the beneficiaries, Aminata Sesay with four of her family that survived the disaster, said, “We have only received food and non-food items from WHH and the package is encouraging because the content is good,”
According to Emurana Sowa, Programme Officer WHH, “We are targeting 750 beneficiaries on the approved list submitted by the Office of National Security (ONS) and the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs. Hopefully, this has cushioned the effects of the disaster on victims especially those in dire need of food, matrasses and blankets.”
Sowa said WHH is also providing a special package for lactating mothers and their children so that they can stay warm in holding centres and eat good food.
The Country Director of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) said the relief items for the disaster victims was provided by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as part of their contribution towards the disaster victims.
Ursula Langkamp of WHH said they will also be supporting flood victims in Moriba Town and Prince Williams in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone, where many houses were flooded and over 1,000 people were severely affected.
