The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, yesterday Wednesday 27 June 2018, signed and issued an Order for Contempt for the arrest and detention of the Director and Senior Managers of the Senegal-based CSE Construction Company.
The Clerk of Parliament read out the Order in the Well of Parliament and handed it over to the Local Unit Commander (LUC) at Parliament’s Police Post.
He said “Pursuant to Section 95 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Honourable Segepoh Solomon Thomas issued an Order of Contempt for the arrest and arraignment before Parliament of the Director and Senior Managers of CSE Construction Company for contempt of Parliament.”
The Deputy Speaker instructed the Sergeant at Arms in Parliament to issue the order to the LUC at the Police Post at Parliament.
The incident involved some CSE workers insulting an SLPP MP, and a vehicular accident involving the MPs vehicle and a CSE truck.
According to the Deputy Speaker, an unnamed Member of Parliament went to the Company’s office and was insulted. The Deputy Speaker summoned the CSE management to Parliament but they failed to appear without excuse.
“As a result of that I therefore ordered the arrest of the Director and all senior managers of that company to be arraigned before this House on the next adjourned date,” he said. He continued giving instructions… “ensure they are arrested and taken to the nearest Police Station preferably the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Deputy Speaker maintained MPs deserve respect as Honourable Members. “These people should be arrested and kept in custody without any bail until they are brought before Parliament,” he ordered.
