Isatu Turay was arrested with three blue drums containing cannabis sativa weighing 37 kilograms on Saturday 16 June 2018 in Waterloo in the western rural District. She was arrested and charged with the offence of Unlawful Possession of Cannabis Sativa contrary to the Pharmacy and Drug Act.
Turay after about ten days in custody, appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at the Siaka Stevens Street Magistrate Court no.1 in Freetown where she pleaded guilty to the offence as charged.
Following plea mitigation by her defence counsel, Sahid Sesay, the Magistrate ordered that the cannabis be destroyed. In addition Turay was asked to pay a fine of Le1 million or spend three years at the Correctional Centre in Freetown. Meanwhile, 11 youths who were arrested on 26 June 2018, for Being found in a place used for smoking Cannabis sativa on Friday also pleaded guilty to the offence. This happened when they made their first appearance before the said Magistrate.
The accused were ordered to pay a fine of Le1 million each or spend two years at the Correctional Centre in Freetown. EBD/30/6/18
