Sierra Leone News: Council to build SSS in York by 2019
York Village is one of the deprived villages along the Peninsula and it currently lacks basic amenities such as electricity, pipe borne water and a senior secondary school. As a way to improve education in the area, the Western Area Rural District Council Chair Kasho J. Holland-Cole said York will have a senior secondary school during the 2019/2020 school year. He said the Western Area Rural Council will fully fund the project in order for a senior secondary school to be in that village. He made such pronouncement during the launching of the bicentenary celebration of York Village at the York Community Centre. Alfred Sesay, a member of the village said, “I am very proud as a member of this village about constructing a senior secondary school. This has been our cry as a village.” Launching the bicentenary celebration, the Chair said, “The people of this village are very obedient, knowledgeable, and reliable,” noting that at the same time they are loyal to their village. Delivering the statement of purpose, Dennis Harman narrated the history of York Village, which started from the era of the slave trade, up to the arrival of the free slave and their settlement in the peninsula area in 1819. He recalled the early days of the Sherbro in the community before the arrival of the Creoles in the 19th century and also showcasing the natural beauty of the beach and caves, which supply spring water, which they called Fori water.
