On Monday 23 October 2017, a Nigerian, Gozie Udoka lsaac, was alleged in possession of 50 wrapped parcels of cocaine weighing 20.7 kg, at the Sierra Leone International Air Port at Port Loko. The accused was arraigned before the Court on six charges of Transporting Prohibited Drugs, Importing Prohibited Drugs and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Drugs contrary to Section 7(b) of the National Drugs Act of 2008. On Thursday 1 February 2018, the accused appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of the Freetown Magistrate Court. Testifying in Court, Superintendent, Ernestine Tucker, Forensic Analyst of the Sierra Leone police, attached at the Transitional Organized Crime Unit at Hastings said, “On 24 October 2017, the accused was brought to their division by a team of police officers from Sierra Leone International Air Port. The witness said all of them assembled in the conference room. A sealed, brown envelope was removed by the Exhibit Clerk, Sergeant Bangura M.M. “I opened the envelope in presence of everybody in the room and I discovered 50 wrapped white substances.” Superintendent Tucker said later they went to the Laboratory lab at Connaught Hospital, where she said two different tests were done, which are presumptive and a confirmative test. She added that such tests are normally done to determine the effect of any substance that they normally have doubts over. According to the witness, “after executing the two tests, the results from both tests illustrated that the substance was cocaine.” Superintendent Tucker said. Also the Exhibit Clerk, Sergeant Mansaray, attached to the Transnational Organized Crime Unit tendered the 50 palettes of cocaine in Court together with the passport and other travelling documents of the accused. Magistrate Santigie remanded the accused at the Male Correctional Centre and adjourned the matter February 8 2018. MJB/1/2/18 By Mohamed J. Bah Friday February 02, 2018.
