China Kingho Group, one of the leading exploration and mining companies in the country, on Friday 8th August, donated the sum of Le400 million (four hundred million Leones) to the Government and People of Sierra Leone as the company’s contribution to the fight against the Ebola pandemic that have killed many people in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
This generosity displayed by the company is in response to the clarion call by the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, for Sierra Leoneans and friends of Sierra Leone to support Government in the fight against Ebola.
Introducing a delegation from Management of China Kingho to the President at State House, the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Hon. Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, explained that in a proactive response to the President’s call for concerted efforts to stem the spread of the Ebola epidemic, he engaged mining companies on Tuesday 5th August 2014, to discuss important issues relating to the epidemic, and exchange ideas on how mining companies can complement Government’s efforts to contain it.
The Minister further explained that the mining companies pledged to join Government, as good friends at a time of need, to fight the Ebola disease, and that China Kingho was about to practically demonstration their commitment to support Government.
Making the donation, on behalf of the Chairman of China Kingho Group, to the President at State House, the Manager of Kingho, Gilbert Zhao, explained that his company has developed a very solid relationship with the country and its people that goes beyond the normal business relationship, and that as true friends of the country and its people they are ready to support Government in the fight against Ebola. He noted that the Ebola epidemic is of concern to everyone, but that China Kingho, led by the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Economic and Commercial Counsel will continue with their operations and support for Sierra Leone through this hard times while taking the necessary precautions to safeguard workers. Gilbert Zhao further maintained that their decision to continue operations is an indication of their commitment to the country and the confidence they have that the fight against Ebola will be won. He said the donation they are making is just to show the people of Sierra Leone that they are not only here for the good times, but are also reliable friends in a time of need. He assured the president of their continued support to Sierra Leone and express hope that the cordial relationship will continue.
In his statement, President Koroma expressed thanks and appreciation on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone, to China Kingho Group, and asked the Manager to covey this gratitude to their Chairman. He noted that Sierra Leone is going through a very difficult period in its history, but assured the company that this threat will be overcome with the same resilience and determination that has sustained the country in the past. He applauded the stance taken by Kingho to stand by the people of Sierra Leone during this difficult time, and explained that this will send a very strong signal that all is not lost. The President noted that mining is critical to the economic development of the country, and that the people will be very much encouraged by the decision of mining companies to continue operations.
