The Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities (CCYA) on Friday 5 October 2018, celebrated their 20th anniversary of service to youth at Kona Lodge in Freetown, with the theme” youth empowerment – a trajectory to national development”. According to the Executive Director of CCYA, Abigail Stevens, the organization was established in September 1998 by student leaders wishing to contribute to a new youth narrative and the long struggle of restoring stability and democracy in Sierra Leone. She stressed that their main objective is to change the narrative of youth in Sierra Leone and channel their situations for national discourse. Today is a very important day for us as an organization. The Chairman Board of Trustee CCYA, Philip John Kanu called on the youth to emulate the footsteps of the founders of CCYA. He noted that youth now have a voice in present-day Sierra Leone. Representing Search for Common Ground, Mamoud Idriss congratulated CCYA for their relentless contribution to youth activities, over the years. He underscored that the CCYA is a key organisation that has been playing vital roles in the life of youth in the country. He maintained that his organisation will continue to support and partner with them. According to the Executive Director of Action Aid Sierra Leone, Mohamed Sillah, CCYA has been very accountable over the years, pointing out that they even return monies when they are unable to complete certain activities. Giving the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Youth, the Deputy Director of Youth Philip Mahyeni said 20 years of service to youth is a laudable achievement by CCYA. He pointed out that the present societal conditions have made things very difficult for young people. Amongst the challenges he mentioned are unemployment, limited resources, illiteracy, malnutrition and hunger. Interesting, after 20 years the situation of youth is still very bad.
