British Council Director, Louisa Waddingham informed both the print and electronic media about her organization’s development plans which is part of 70 years of British Council’s existence in Sierra Leone.
Madam Waddingham explained that the celebration will last throughout the year, as the British Council has served as an important facility and space for educational,cultural and intellectual issues on the United kingdom in close collaboration with thousands of Sierra Leoneans and members of the International Community.
The British Council Director furthered that the purpose of her organization’s existence is to create opportunity world-wide and for this reason, British Council in Sierra Leone, which is the oldest in Africa, will continue to maximize existing resources for the growing demand to provide improved and relevant services in Freetown and nation-wide.
Asked why the British Council closed its library service to the public, madam Waddingham responded that it was a corporate decision to close the library in 2008 not only in Sierra Leone but all everywhere the British Council operates, but hastened to inform the media that the closure of libraries gave birth to more programs, focusing more on education in different parts of the country.
The training, she said, targets school children and Head teachers as well as principals, and the school training program will last till 2015,but madam Waddingham called for collaboration in order for the program to continue after 2015.
Also as part of the 70 years of existence celebration,the British Council has decided to refurbish the building in advance of inviting a sub-tenant to share the first and second floors, as this will make British Council more customer driven and cost effective, as a service provider in Sierra Leone.
Batiloy Warritay, a communication for development specialist who is also a consultant with the British Council, encouraged the media to access the council, so that they will get more insight on the different programs the organization is doing nation-wide, in order to give more chance for more opportunities for a better life.
