The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in the Southern Region, Mustapha Kamara, has noted with dismay the lawless nature of some of the commercial motorbike riders in Bo who had threatened to burn down the New London Police Post over what they alleged as harassment by the Police
Addressing over one hundred bike riders at the Police Office around Clock Tower in Bo on Friday 24 November 2017, AIG Kamara said that some of the riders do not want to work within the laws as most of them do not wear crash helmets, ride without number plates and on bikes that are not licensed.
He disclosed that some of the riders have been arrested for violations of the laws and could have been charged to court but there was no court sitting last week. He cautioned the bike riders to work within the law, as they are always ready to enforce the law to the letter.
AIG Kamara said that his colleagues in Kenema have been highly praised for enforcing the law, adding that they have the constitutional responsibility to protect the life and property.
According him, they had called the executive of the Bike Riders Union to discuss the way forward to enforce the law by ensuring that their members wear crash helmets, bikes to use registered number plates but to no avail.
“I have told you that if a police officers harasses you when you have all your documents in place, report to me and I will take action,” AIG Kamara said. He added,
“You have the right to protest and should be peaceful but not the rowdy way by blocking traffic.”
The Bo District Chair of Bike Riders Union, Alfred Y. Kamara alias Mashia, confirmed that the police boss in the south has called them to a meeting and discussed the traffic offences ranging from riding without license to unregistered number plates.
He said that they pleaded with them to exercise patience because they were new in office and that they will talk to their members to abide by the laws. Mashia however said that they will continue to talk to their members to ensure that they work within the laws.
