The Acting regional commander east Assistant Inspector General of Police, Francis Nyuma Bundor, called on the leadership of the Bike Riders Union (BRU) in Kenema to tame their membership and obey the laws. He said two days ago the membership of BRU took to the streets to hunt members of the Road Corps Traffic Wardens. The BRU caused damage to the office and vehicles in the yard of the Road Corps.
According to the AIG, this happened when an unregistered motorbike rider was trying to evade arrest along Maxwell Khobe Street in Kenema.
He said under his leadership he will not allow anyone to disturb the peace of the nation by taking the law into their hands.
The AIG addressed the executive of the Bike Riders Union, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority Road Corps and other stakeholders in Kenema while looking into the ugly relationship between the Road Corps and the bike riders.
He also said investigations have proven the BRU membership are lawless and prone to mob action when contentious issues arise.
He urged the BRU leadership to have a proactive team to nip such unfortunate moves by their membership in the bud, and also to implement some punitive measures against their membership.
Earlier in his statement, the Kenema District BRU Chair, Safia Kpaka alias Bigie, apologized on behalf of his membership and said he would not support any member who takes the law into his own hands. He said the relationship with the Police and the Road Corps has been cordial but noted there are a few members who create problems. He assured the AIG and the public of the BRU cooperation.
