The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association said athletes representing Sierra Leone in this year ECOWAS regional 11 U-20 championship to be hosted in Cape Coast, Ghana on the 22-24 June 2018, may not make the trip because of funding. He said they sent their budget last month but nothing has been approved.
He revealed that the Sierra Leone delegation should have departed Sierra Leone on Wednesday June 20th 2018 but the delegation was unable to leave the shores because government is unable to provide the funding.
According to information from the Sports Ministry they are still working on it to make sure that the trip becomes a reality they want to see how best they can facility it so that they will depart today ahead of the competition in Friday.
Ibrahim Sillah, a member of the athletics family, said if the government fails to fund the athletes it will be a big blow to the government who said they want to see association taking part in international competitions.
Most of the athletes said they have taken their time to train and if they are unable to represent the country it will not be good for them so they are appealing to those in charge to do everything possible so the trip will be a reality.
The 20 athletes involved include:
Ibrahim Dinho Kamara, Noah Conteh, Julius Kolokoh, Alpha Conteh, Alford Conteh, Ibrahim Kallon, Joseph C. Faulkner, Ibrahim S. Turay, Samuel S. Mansaray, Alie C.K. Kpaka, Fatmata Awolo, Famata Koroma, Maseray Sesay, Fatmata J Bangura, Fatima B Sesay, Annie Sandy, Sonita F. Kamara, Georgiana Sesay, Isatu Turay and Jane S. Kargbo.
