While visiting the Saint Joseph’s Secondary School Monday, Dr. Jill Biden, wife of US Vice President, offered prayers for the victims and families that are affected by the Ebola Virus. She said the “US Government applauds the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and the World Health Organisation effort to treat victims and contain the virus as quickly as possible.” Greeted with applause from over one thousand pupils and a welcome music by a mixed band, from Saint Joseph’s School, Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School, Dr. Jill Biden accompanied by Wife of Sierra Leone Vice President Khadija Sam Sumana and Catherine Russell marched gracefully to occupy their seats. She shared her impression and experiences during her three country visit; Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and now Sierra Leone which was focused on the importance of girls education, women’s empowerment and good governance, and how all of this helps to build the economy, improve health and education, strengthen democracy and foster peace and security. During her stops she said she was opportuned to meet with remarkable people and heard lot of amazing stories. She cited the Shalom Community school, which is partnering with the USAID to improve teachers skills, increase the involvement of parents and ensure that vulnerable students have the skill they need to succeed in said and outside the class room. In Congo she said, the delegation was able to meet with women entrepreneurs one of whom Theresa is a woman scientist who now owns a business manufacturing and selling traffic-directing robots. Dr. Biden said “Theresa had to overcome steep challenges- including laws in her country that hold women and girls back.” Further on education she told the pupils that they are being set on a lifelong path where they will have the confidence and tools to succeed. The Principal of the School Mrs Lamboi gave a back ground of the school which was established by the Catholic Mission and Sisters of Clunny to prepare women in domestic science and other disciplines. The secondary school opened in 1922 with a diversified curriculum, and because of the strides they have made over the years, the school has risen to be part of the top five in the country. To demonstrate the moves they have made, Lamboi said one of the pupils Kadiatu Esther Abdulai won the essay competition which is organised by the US Embassy. She expressed satisfaction for the visit of Dr Biden who is also a lecturer and former teacher as this is a history making event for them since they have not received such highly placed individual for the past 125 years “America has come to Sierra Leone and to Saint Joseph’s Secondary School” The school visitation marks the end of the three country tour in Sierra Leone, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo.
