Between 1 October 2017 to1 January 2018, Kandeh Sesay was alleged to have stolen $12,000 USD from the personal safe of the Minister of Political and Public Affairs, Nanette Thomas, in Freetown. The accused was charged by the police with Larceny contrary to Section 13 of the Larceny Act of 1916. On Wednesday 24 January 2018, the accused appeared before Magistrate Albert Moody of the Freetown Magistrate Court No.1. Testifying in Court, Staff Sergeant Mohamed Sheriff Conteh, personal security guard to the Minister said on the date in question, he was in his house when he received a phone call from the daughter in-law of the Minister. The witness said, “When I arrived, I was told by the Minister that $12,000 USD was missing from her safe. During that process, the Minister’s sister called and informed the Minister that she knew a man of God who can detect the thief through bible and key.” “Later the Minister’s sister called and informed us that the accused name was mentioned during the bible and key process,” Conteh said. The mystical process indicated that the accused knew something about the money and he must be harassed in order to produce the money. According to the witness, he met the accused at the bathroom where he persuaded him to admit to the theft from the safe. “After my engagement with the accused he told me that he did take the money from the safe.” Conteh said the accused took him to the house store where he was hiding a white envelope. He noted that when they came into the parlour of the house and opened the envelope, they found $8,500 USD. The witness said after another engagement with the accused, he produced an additional $300 USD. The witness maintained that when the accused was asked about the remaining $3,200 USD, the accused said he spent it during the festival at the National Stadium. The accused was represented by I.P. Mammie. Magistrate Moody remanded the accused at the Male Correctional Centre. The matter was adjourned to 30 January 2018. MB/24/1/18 By Mohamed J. Bah Thursday January 25, 2017.
