A 476 carat diamond was last Thursday (9/11/17) discovered in Kono District.
It is unofficially the 29th largest diamond ever found in the world.
The Namibian owned Trustco Resources with 51% shareholding of Meya Mining, announced the find, and the 100% Sierra Leonean owned ‘Germinate’ with 49% shareholding of Meya Mining are the original license holders.
Meya Mining now holds a “four year exclusive diamond exploration licence EL: 07/2015” which is a kimberlite concession covering an area of 130.38 km², “spanning from the Kamara, Gbense to the Tankoro chiefdoms in Kono District.”
According to the release “two other special diamonds of 19.70 carats and 27.93 carats were discovered on the same day (Thursday) in the Kono District.”
These finds were made from the first ore washed from Meya minings first blast in its exploration venture.
The real value in monetary terms of the diamond has not been ascertained, but initial reactions are that with its white colour, it is likely to fetch more money than Pastor Momoh’s 709 carat.
Meya Mining has since expressed its intention of “putting the diamond on sale by public tender, so that it will serve as a positive attraction to credible businessmen who wish to do business in Sierra Leone.”
