Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Sierra Leone and Russia have embarked on discussions aimed at potential collaboration in the realm of peaceful nuclear energy, signalling a pivotal step forward in bilateral relations between the two nations. The dialogue, which includes the prospect of establishing a nuclear power plant in Sierra Leone, follows a high-level meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Timothy Musa Kabba.
In a press conference held in Moscow, Lavrov unveiled plans to re-establish Moscow’s embassy in Sierra Leone by the end of the year, underscoring Russia’s commitment to strengthening ties with African nations. “We plan to open new diplomatic missions on the African continent, including in Freetown,” Lavrov announced. “In Freetown, we expect to do it this year, before the end of this year.”
With both sides demonstrating keen interest and commitment, Lavrov highlighted the imminent realization of decisions made, paving the way for tangible progress in various sectors, including nuclear energy. “We have agreed with Mr. Minister that he will formulate additional wishes for Russian investors in various sectors, including in the field of possible cooperation in nuclear energy and peaceful atom outside the energy sector,” Lavrov stated.
Echoing Lavrov’s sentiments, Kabba emphasized the significance of reopening the Russian embassy, citing its potential to bolster trust and facilitate closer collaboration between Russian and Sierra Leonean businesses. Noting Sierra Leone’s pressing energy needs amidst an ongoing crisis, Kabba welcomed Russia’s potential investments in the energy sector while stressing the importance of eco-friendly solutions.
In ensuring transparency and investor confidence, Kabba reassured that every agreement concerning private business in Sierra Leone undergoes thorough ratification by parliament, offering added security for foreign investors.
The burgeoning partnership between Sierra Leone and Russia holds promise in addressing Sierra Leone’s energy challenges while fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.
