On Tuesday 6th August 2019, Africell Limited signed a $100 million telecommunication expansion investment deal with United States Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). The financing agreement with Africell, according to US Ambassador, Maria Brewer, is to help create investment in critical infrastructure in the telecommunication sector. Ambassador Brewer stated OPIC provides businesses footholds in the markets, catalyzes new revenues and contributes to jobs and growth opportunities both at home and internationally.

Sierra Leone being a beneficiary to the new resources, Ambassador Brewer added represents a strong partnership between Sierra Leone and the United States. Ziad Dalloul, founder and chair, Africell stated that the financing will be used to expand the availability, reach and quality of communications and associated value added services across Africell in Sierra Leone, Gambia, Congo and Uganda. Dalloul noted, “Africell is at the forefront of the evolving landscape of Africa communication, data and technology enabled services.” Together with OPIC, Dalloul said Africell will continuously invest in new solutions that will drive development and improve customer’s experience. Mohamed Rahman Swaray, Information Minister urged Africell to use part of the financing to support network expansion especially in remote areas across Sierra Leone.
