Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Sierra Leone Police with funding from the United States of America on Friday 18th November 2022, concluded two weeks of Training with certification of Trainers in electoral management for the June 2023 elections in order to maintain a safe and secure environment in Sierra Leone.
In his statement during the certification ceremony, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu stated that every five years Sierra Leone is faced with a huge challenge and the task of policing general elections and next year June 2023, the country will go to the polls.
He disclosed further that the US-funded TOT election management support was timely as it helps prepare the police for the 2023 elections. He encouraged all participants who benefitted from the training to impact the knowledge gained to others to help them adequately equip themselves before the elections.
He went on to commend the United States for their cooperation with the SLP when the need arises including several training for their support staff. Seeking the inclusion of other sister forces in the country, IG William Faya Sellu, said the SLP has always collaborated with them despite the limitation of the police.
Political Adviser from the United States of America, Paul Stucky, during the ceremony presented that the training was uniquely designed for Sierra Leone for the conduct of free fair elections in 2023 and to make sure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair and secure environment.
The training he went on to state came with public order management module that would be used by the police in meeting international best practice. AJ/20/11/2022
