Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In the most recent update of the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings, Sierra Leone’s Senior Women’s Cricket Team has surged ahead, securing the 39th position globally. This remarkable ascent sees them move up by five places from their previous 44th position among the 116 global cricketing nations.
In the African cricketing landscape, Sierra Leone now stands at 9th place, marking a notable rise of three places from their former 12th position among the 20 well-financed contenders on the continent.
This remarkable achievement is attributed to the outstanding performance of the women’s team in recent international series and ICC tournaments. The positions they secured and the formidable teams they defeated played a pivotal role in this upward trajectory, meeting the stringent requirements set by the ICC.
To earn a place in the ICC rankings, a member country must actively participate in at least 60 T20 international matches within a two-year calendar period. Sierra Leone’s Women’s Cricket Team has not only met but surpassed these criteria, solidifying their position on the global stage.
In a parallel development, the National Senior Men’s Cricket Team made a significant breakthrough into the ICC rankings in 2021 following their participation in the Nigeria T20 International Bilateral Series held in Lagos in October of that year. Currently holding the 67th position globally, a two-place improvement, they are positioned 12th in Africa.
The rise of both the men’s and women’s teams in the ICC rankings is a testament to Sierra Leone’s growing prowess and commitment to the sport, setting the stage for further cricketing success on both national and international fronts. BT/13/2/2024
