Member of Parliament for Constituency 97, the Wellington Industrial area, Hon Victoria Saidu Kamara, has told parliament of a security threat at the Freetown International Airport, Lungi.
She told also Awoko that the security situation at the airport with regards to those in charge of baggage was very serious because of the rampant pilfering at the baggage section.
Hon Victoria Saidu Kamara explained that visitors would arrive at the airport with their luggage and by the time they were received after the necessary checks, a lot of pilfering would have taken place.
“Whether it is happening at the airport here or at the connection point in London, I will need the minister of Transport and Aviation to conduct a full investigation because this situation cannot be tolerated and this is a new government and we are trying to clean our image internationally”, she explained further.
Hon. Saidu Kamara maintained that with the interest shown by foreign businessmen and other people to invest in the country, it would be disheartening for such pilfering to occur as “it will not tell well for the country’s reputation to the outside world”.
“People working at the baggage section should be people of integrity and they cannot be seen as those perpetrating hardship on travelers,” she lamented.
Hon Victoria Saidu Kamara also explained that most flights touched at the airport late at night at the time when security was lessened, thus giving way for those at the baggage section to pilfer people’s luggage.
She explained that she was a victim when she returned on January 28 where here luggage was tampered with.
