To further improve on the digital platform for e-learning, the Ministry of Basic Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) in collaboration with Plan International has distributed solar wind power radios to pupils in eight districts across the country. Girls from primary to senior secondary level received one set each from the 25,000 battery free solar wind power radio sets during their formal commissioning by Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh at the Holy Rosary Secondary for Girls in Pujehun Township. Distributing the radios alongside girl friendly charity organisation Plan International officials, Minister Sengeh used the occasion to assure pupils of government’s commitment to ensuring that every school going child receives the fullest support to attain quality education, irrespective of which part of the country the child resides.

Encouraging the pupils to focus on their education, the minister also urged school authorities to be more like parents, noting that children spend most of their time in school including after-school lessons. Minister Sengeh said negligence to put premium on education has led some school officials and children – as a result of not wanting to go the extra mile – to introduce bribery, sex for grades, and other incentives that result in children’s abysmal performance in public examinations.

“When a child is encouraged and welfare isadequately met at home and in school be sure that counselling and access to school materials will act as motivation to allow the child to do well in school.” School authorities at the Holy Rosary Catholic Mission School expressed appreciation for the ministry’s proactive steps with Plan to ensure that children in rural communities are part of government’s education package during this COVID-19 period. School children in Class 6, JSS 1, JSS 2, JSS 3 and SSS 1 assured the Basic and Senior Education Minister they would continue to study and work hard to get good grades, and committed themselves to a zero pregnancy campaign during school closures and after.

Meanwhile, the West African Examinations Council has released its WAEC e-learning resource for candidates preparing for the 2020 examination. According to the Chief Examiner of WAEC at www.waeconline.org.ng/e-learning, the report has all the subjects and reports for the past 10 years. The website has past questions and other guides which candidates should use as an added advantage when preparing for and during exams.
