Mount Vacouma which is situated along Vacouma Street has become the newly discovered Iron mining site for school going children in Bo.
The mountain it could be recalled was formed from refuse disposed at the site over the years. But when the dump site achieved the peak of a mountain which indeed earned it the coveted name of ‘Mount Vacouma’ the Bo City Council banned it as a dump disposal site.
As the mountain was formed from organic debris which makes it rich in organic manure, the residents thus started using the fertile grounds to grow crops. But this trend might be taking the reverse with the mad rush for rusty iron. The boys spend most the day there digging into the mountain looking for unwanted items
Speaking to Awoko, Abdul Karim a JSS 2 pupil attending the Every Nation Academy explained that it has now become habitual for them to be at the site any day soon after school. He explained that they dig up the mountain in teams and sell whatever they find and divide the proceeds.
Mohamed Kamara a class six pupil of the Islamic Primary School admitted “I am a senior hustler” as his parents are not that financially well off to send him to school.
Abdul Turay a class six pupil of the Ahmadiyya Secondary School stated that his own proceeds go to augment his parents fund to pay his school fees.
The children told Awoko that it was very little money that the buyers pay them as they get only Le300 for kilogram. When asked by Awoko if they do not sustain injuries the boys admitted that they do but went on to term the injuries as ‘minor.’
