Save the Children UK an International Humanitarian Organization that focuses on the welfare and protection of Children around the world has embarked on massive sensitization campaign on breast feeding at the Kroo Bay in Freetown.
The objective of the campaign is to encourage lactating mothers to exclusively breast feed new born babies for a period of six months for the growth and good health of their new born babies.
Joanna Joseph Health Program Worker at Save the Children UK- Sierra Leone office told lactating mothers at Kroo Bay that the Global Strategy on Infant and Young Child Feeding rightly promotes breast feeding and the use of indigenous foods.
She informed them that breast milk is far more appropriate than expensive and highly packaged baby milk and food whose nutritional value is so often exaggerated as breast feeding is usually the most affordable option.
She also explained how to position a baby before breast feeding, and the need to keep the breast and hands clean including the environment, adding that the health of the baby lies in the hands of the mother.
The sensitization was interactive and demonstrative as lactating mothers asked several questions relating to the well being of new born babies and methodologies of breast feeding. She noted that care for both mother and child, needs to be strengthened and focused on child immunizations, bed nets, and quality treatment.
Joanna Joseph also said that Save the Children UK is working to improve infant, child and maternal health through the protection, promotion and support of breast feeding and optimal complementary feeding practices.
Bintu Koroma, MCH Aid Worker at the Kroo Bay Community Health Center encouraged lactating mothers in the area to always breast feed their new born babies and keep the environment clean,
She informed that breast milk is the best food for new born babies as it will keep them in good health and frowned at harmful traditional practices that deprived new born babies of exclusive breast feeding.
