The Station Manager, Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) in Kenema, Mohamed Yayah Sesay, has called on the public to honour their SALWACO bills, adding that the institution is charged with complementing government’s effort in providing clean and affordable water for people in the provincial towns and cities.
He said their operation as mandated by law in the 2017 Act is to provide water for the people, who are to pay for the service. He disclosed that providing clean and affordable water for the residents involves a lot, ranging from fuel, oil, chemicals, and payment of staff among others, and assured that despite the huge challenges they will continue to provide water for the people of Kenema and its environs.
He said SALWACO’s current operation is aimed at disconnecting customers who don’t pay their water bills.
He disclosed that most of the water shortage in Kenema is due to human activities in the Kambui forest which includes illicit mining, deforestation and charcoal burning, disclosing that very soon they will shut down two dams in the Kamboi hills due to people’s involvement in the water catchment areas which will affect those living along Maxwell Khobe Street, Prison Barracks, Reservation Area and the RTI community. He warned residents of Nyandeyama Section to stop illegal connections in their community, as defaulter will face the full penalty of the law.
