The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Sierra Leone will in March this year host the West African examining bodies from Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana and the Gambia in a five days council meeting.
Explaining to the Press about the highlights of the forth coming council meeting, the Head of national office WAEC, S.M Sapateh, said this is the second time Sierra Leone will be hosting the meeting which will take place at Hotel Kimbima to be attended by 52 delegates from the five member countries.
He stated that 6 delegates will be represented by The Gambia, 12 from Ghana, 6 from Liberia, 19 from Nigeria and 9 from Sierra Leone. Also to attend the council meeting will be the various Government nominees, representatives of the Universities and members elected by the national committee of each country.
Sapateh further explained that the council will look at the Registrar’s annual Report, decisions and recommendations of the International Administrative and Finance Committee, matters from Board of Trustees of the Endowment fund, decisions and recommendations of the international appointment committee and any other matter of vital interest to the council.
He however stated that since the holding of the annual meetings, Sierra Leone can boast of three chairmen of the council who were Dr. Davidson Nicol (1964-69), Dr. S.T Matturi (1972-76), and Prof. John Kamara (1994-97).
This year’s meeting will again see a fourth Sierra Leonean, Prof Jonas Redwoode- Sawyer elected as chairman along side Canon Dr. J.E.M Taylor- Pearce with one acting registrar, Alhaji Allieu Swarray Deen.
The meeting will open with a public lecture on the topic: Globalization and the challenge for education in a post conflict situation:
A Sierra Leonean perspective to be delivered by Prof Abdullah Mansaray, Deputy Chancellor, Njala University College. The following day will be the formal opening ceremony under the distinguished patronage of President Ernest Bai Koroma.
