Sierra Leone’s international who plays for Groningen, Gibril Sankoh aka Barrel as a defender has been handed a five match ban by the Dutch FA, the KNVB after a reckless tackle on Williem II defender Leonardo Veloso.
During the match Barrel received his marching order in the dying minutes of last weekend’s goalless draw against Williem II in the ongoing Dutch premier league.
According to statements from the Dutch FA, the defender’s action was totally unacceptable and they’ve opted to hand him a hefty suspension which is a five match ban.
If Barrel is absent for five matches this implies his season has very much come to an end already with Groningen, having only two more games to play before the play-offs begin.
However according to reports from the Groningen website, Barrel has apologized for his harsh tackle on Veloso, adding that he was unable to stop his speed to win the ball.
“I would like to say sorry to my club, my team mates, Veloso and the rest of Williem II team. It was a mistake which I hope will not happen again. I wish the team will cope with my absence,” Barrel said.
