The Sierra Leone Book Trust (SALBOT) yesterday donated about one hundred and six (106) cartoons of books to Peace Corps Volunteers.
Presenting the books on behalf of SALBOT, the founder Sallieu Turay said that they have been working with the Public Affairs Department of the US Embassy since 2004 to implement educational programmes and this has included stocking of the American Corners and shelves.
This is the second time that such a book donation is being made. In 2012 a total of over 5,000 books were donated and this time they are donating over 4,000 new and relevant books to the Peace Corps.
Turay maintained that these books are teaching and learning materials “aids for junior and senior secondary school levels, and will be distributed and used for teaching and learning in schools where Peace Corps are attached throughout Sierra Leone.”
The mission of SALBOT he said is to help “create a functional literate society in Sierra Leone through the provision of books, teaching and learning aids in order to meet the informational, educational and cultural needs of the society.”
The organization he went on also encourages reading for lifelong learning and enhancement of the individual quality of life.
“as an indigenous charity organization we are striving to ensure that every pupil deserves a book and no child is deprived the right to learn and discover through reading.”
According to Sallieu Turay this donation was made possible by their partners in America including, Books for Africa, Books without Borders Global, Sabre Foundatio
