The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) football team participated in the West Africa Liaison Office (WALO) football tournament which took place in Guinea from the 1st -13th April this year.
The tournament was the 3rd edition of the Amadou Toumany Toure (ATT) Cup and ten countries from West Africa participated.
The WALO tournament is an opportunity for soldiers to meet and create friendship through sports.
The RSLAF Football team was in the group B category alongside Guinea the host nation, and Burkina Faso. Their exemplary performance coupled with the exhibition of talents during the Ghana match left many pondering where the team went wrong during their first two encounters with Guinea and Burkina Faso. It was agreed at the 36th General Assembly meeting that the four teams that eventually made their way to the semi-finals during this year’s WALO tournament will be played in Algeria in 2010 under the auspices of the organization of the Military Sports in Africa (OSMA)
This year’s WALO tournament was won by Burkina Faso who defeated Guinea by three goals to one (3-1) in a penalty shootout .The third place went to Mali.
