The Military has launched search and rescue operations in response to the fatal boat disaster which took place Tuesday 8th September.
Reports say that the local boat named Tay-tay was coming from down river Shenge in the Kaboro chiefdom in the Moyamba district enroute to Tombo when it encountered bad weather between the Plaintain and Banana Islands.
The boat is believed to have capsized with about 250 passengers onboard including children who were returning from their holidays.
According to a release from the Maritime Wing of the SL Armed Forces so far 40 survivors were rescued by local fishermen and the military and are receiving treatment at the Shenge hospital while 10 corpses have been fished out of the waters.
The Chief of Defence Staff Maj. Gen. Nelson Williams along with UNIPSIL organised search parties onboard boats and surveillance onboard a helicopter to try and find any other survivors though their efforts are being severely hampered by rain.
Hopes for the remaining 210 are slowly fading.
